REU Project:
CMEs and Waves

Project: Coronal mass ejection origins (CMEs) are marked by a number of noticeable features. Among these are diffuse coronal waves (EIT waves). For this project, the student will perform quantitative analysis of one or more CMEs and their associated EIT waves. The goal will be to measure EIT wave and CME plasma parameters, in order to determine:
  • How EIT wave velocities relate to EIT wave amplitudes. This will test the Wills-Davey et al. (2007) EIT wave "solitary wave" model.
  • How closely EIT wave final positions match the CME footprint. This will test the Attrill et al. (2007) model.
